improving and passing on knowledge about predators
My job as a transhumant shepherd and breeder has led me to become fully involved in the issue of the wolf. Using my observations and experience in the field, I approach the matter from a technical angle. My training courses and conferences are designed to share knowledge and create an opportunity for dialogue. I focus on the impact of predation and the protection methods available.
Group training courses
My group presentations introduce the biology of the wolf, its behaviour, its role in ecosystems and its habitat, to give a better understanding of the conditions for its return to France. They provide an understanding of the situation of livestock farmers and the impact of the predator's presence on their herds. They assess the risks of predation and look at the protective measures that can be implemented to reduce the vulnerability of domestic animals. In particular, they develop the role and behaviour of livestock guardian dogs, as well as the conduct and gestures to adopt to avoid disrupting their work. My courses take place in the classroom or on the mountain pasture.
General public conferences
My events are open to all, at the request of associations, local authorities or tourist offices. My talks can take the form of conferences, discussion evenings or visits to mountain pastures. The aim is to pass on knowledge about wolves and livestock farming. The main topics covered are: the challenges posed by the wolf's return, the predator's behaviour and social organisation, the situation in France and neighbouring European countries, the wolf's behaviour when faced with methods of protecting herds, and the work of guard dogs and how to behave when faced with them.
The Cistole method
I prefer a lively approach, rich in anecdotes, case studies, examples of real observations, images and videos of original attacks, scenes of wolf cubs playing and stories of shepherds from all over the world. My aim is to convey well-documented information. I do my best to take a technical look at the complexity of the wilderness, leaving out any naivety or emotional charge.
